Chris won gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and is a great prospect for a medal in the pool at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.SPORT BIOChris took part in a wide variety of sports when growing up until swimming took priority at the age of 10 and he started to train and compete at South Tyneside Swimming club, taking inspiration from Adrian Moorhouse and Duncan Goodhew. By the age of 18 he was National College champion and at 20 he was included in the World Class performance programme and experienced his first England squad call up. Chris has held 4 National titles and as a former British and Commonwealth record holder was the first British male to dip under 59 seconds for the 100m breaststroke.Chris represented Great Britain at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the 200m breastroke but he was slightly out of sorts and finished outside the medals.However at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne Chris produced some incredible swims. Representing England he won Gold in the 50m and 100m breastroke and silver in the 4 x 100m medley. He was GB’s most successful swimmer.On the way home from Australia Chris picked up an unexpected bronze at the World (Short Course) Championships in Shanghai in the 50m breastroke in a tough field. Chris has now been ranked in the top 6 in the world for over 2 years.He now has his sights firmly set on Olympic success in Beijing 2008 and if he continues to improve on his recent performances will be one of GB’s best hopes of success.SPECIALIST AREASChris belongs to an elite swimming group called the Aquatic Crusaders where his identity is the ‘Cooky Monster’. Their mission is to inspire, motivate and demonstrate how children can achieve success by following in their foot steps. They carry out a number of road shows and demonstrations each year to clubs, children, parents and coaches, sharing their experiences and offering them the opportunity to gain an insight into the live of professional athletes.
