Team Captain & Bronze Medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics
As one of GB’s greatest ever swimmers earning himself eleven major medals in a career spanning over 10 years, Steve retired at the very top of his game adding an Olympic Bronze medal from Athens to his vast collection. He was the inspirational captain of his country who never failed to deliver when it mattered most.
SPORT BIO
Steve Parry the GB Swimming Team Captain achieved his lifetime goal of becoming an Olympic Medalist in Athens.
He competed in the 200m Butterfly, perhaps one of the hotly contested events of the programme. He was racing against the swimming sensation Michael Phelps, the 18 year old American star. Parry became 1 of only 3 people to ever beat Michael Phelps in his semi-final swim landing him the centre lane for the final. The final was extremely close and Parry finished in 3rd Place with a new British and Commonwealth Record.
His victory was made ever sweeter by the fact that he missed out on making his team in Atlanta and missed a medal by hundredths of a second in Sydney. His dream was realised in what has been portrayed as one of the greatest battles in the pool of the Athens games.
Steve originates from Liverpool, but studied and trained on a full scholarship at Florida State University. He excelled in his time in America and gained selection for the Sydney 2000 Olympic team, winning the American National title. After the disappointment of Sydney, Parry entered into a short retirement period before starting to train again for Athens.
Steve is a fantastic motivator leading the GB Swim Team for 4 years to unprecedented success. He is able to articulate the clear ups and downs of professional sport, which when coupled with his corporate education make his speeches extremely relevant to the business environment.
