An athlete at Cambridge University, he won his blue for Pole Vault, and had also tried Ice Hockey before taking up the sport at the age of 21. In 1997 he started competing at World Cup level and through hard work, and a fierce competitive spirit, managed to qualify for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. He twice broke the national record as he achieved his aim of a top 25 finish at the Winter Olympics. The performances meant Hatton came 25th out of 50 competitors. Mark was the highest placed slider from a nation without a luge track and Britain's first representative in the sport since 1994.He has improved every year and in 2005 he broke into the top 20 sliders in World Cup with an 18th place finish in Igls, Austria.Mark Hatton achieved the qualifying standard for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games and entered the competition as one of the top 15 favourites. However he suffered a high speed crash on the 3rd run, but refused to let go of his sled and went on to record a finish time.
