Following his retirement from athletics, Steve represented British Athletics on the British Olympic Committee from 1995 until March 1999, and was also part of the 2012 Olympic Bid Team. He was appointed Chairman of the English Institute of Sport in May 2000 and has been a member of the Lottery Awards Panel for Sport since 1997.
Steve also works as a presenter and athletics commentator for the BBC. He has written for The Daily Telegraph and Guardian during five Athletic championships and writes a monthly column with a major athletic magazine. He is also founder of the COCO charitable foundation.
