Pete Waterfield achieved silver at the Olympic Games in 2004 in the 10 metre synchronised diving event. This brought to an end a 44 year medal drought for British divers. He is now working to achieve his ultimate goal the gold medal in Beijing 2008.
Pete Waterfield achieved silver at the Olympic Games in 2004 in the 10 metre synchronised diving event. This brought to an end a 44 year medal drought for British divers. He is now working to achieve his ultimate goal the gold medal in Beijing 2008.SPORT BIOPete started diving when he was nine years old. He switched from swimming to diving because he thought it looked more exciting. Pete went on a summer-camp and really enjoyed it so he went and had a training session at the Waltham Forest diving club. After a couple of weeks Pete's coach, Lindsey Fraser, spotted Pete's talent and took him under her wing and he then started training more intensly at Crystal Palace.Pete competed in the national championships and after coming 2nd a number of times he achieved gold and stayed at the top. He then went on to compete in the Junior European Championships where he excelled and became Junior European Champion. He then took the next step and started competing in senior competitions.In 1994 they introduced synchronised diving that was when Pete and Leon Tayler started diving together. They didn’t think it would work at first because Leon is 6 inches taller then Pete but it did work out - they had similar techniques.Pete and Leon went on to win European and World medals. They competed at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000. They came fourth which was pretty hard to swallow and Pete came 31st in the individual platform event which made it even harder but it made him even more determined to do well in the future and took this part of his career as a learning curve.In 2002 he became the Senior European Champion and fourth in the world and in that same year he became the Commonwealth Champion. In 2004 Pete and Leon gained second place at the World Cup and they both qualified for the Olympics. This meant a lot more hard work but Pete was determined to prove that he could be succesful. At the Olympics Pete and Leon achieved the silver in the 10 metre synchronised diving event and Pete got 5th in the individual event - a big improvement on the Sydney games.Pete has an Olympic silver medal but now he wants a gold one. So, in the coming years he will be working even harder at everything because he has learnt a lot and wants to learn more and have a lot more success in the years to come.SPECIALIST AREASAfter the Olympic games Pete has started to do motivational speaking for companies, which he really enjoys. Since and before the Olympics he has learnt a lot about motivation, team building, goal setting, time management, positive psychology and other traits that are not only important to world class athletes but to anybody who wants to succeed.
